September 26, 2008 | ISSUE 46•52 ISSUE 44•39
NASHVILLE, TN—After months of futile entreaties to upgrade to its latest version, web browser Internet Explorer made a last-ditch proposal to become local man Jeremy Drewing's primary Internet application Monday. 'Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?' the software program asked in an attempt to guilt Drewing into accepting its offer out of pure pity. Sources say Explorer went so far as to highlight the 'Yes' button in the pop-up window in the hopes of baiting him into pressing it, and even emitted a sad little 'beep' in a pathetic bid for attention. Drewing opted to keep Firefox as his default browser, thus relegating Internet Explorer back to its primary functions: looking up pornography and Googling ex-girlfriends

Google Launches Long-Awaited E-Bookstore
Google Launches Long-Awaited E-Bookstore: "Google has launched its long-awaited e-bookstore, Google E-books, bringing more than 3 million books — many of them free — to any device with a web browser in the U.S.
The initiative, previously known as Google Editions, offers an alternative sales model from the dominant players in the space, such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Apple.
Instead of purchasing e-books through a single online store to read only on compatible software (i.e. books bought from the Kindle Store can only be read on Kindle apps), Google (Google) lets consumers buy books either from its store or any other online vendor that sells books in EPUB and PDF formats, and read them on any device with a web browser.

Now I am going to tell you about a freeware macro recording software which is more simple than Easy Macro Recorder (doesn't have any 'macro editing' features) but more easier to use. dotTechies meet Do It Again:
2009-10-22_210703
Do It Again is an extremely easy-to-use macro recorder which records all keyboard and mouse clicks. You simply click on 'Create a New Task', do whatever you want to record, then hit the Scroll Lock key on your keyboard to end the recording. You pick a name for the macro, and done - you can play it back at will by clicking on the macro from the Do It Again program window or you can associate .DIA files with Do It Again and double click on the macro files (one .DIA file is created for each macro you created and placed in Do It Again's program folder) to run the macros.

If you're busy—and you know you are—you're probably using some system to keep track of what you've got to do and where you need to go. Hopefully that's working for you, whether it be scraps of paper taped to your monitor, or some fancy computer application. On the off chance that you're looking for something better, maybe NudgeMail deserves a peek.
With NudgeMail, setting up reminders is as easy as sending an email. You set up a reminder based on how you address your note, or by the subject you use in your message. They claim to be able to recognize just about any format for your reminder, whether you set it for '2 hours from now', 'Monday', or 'January 10'. All you need to do is to send your message from an account you monitor regularly, since that's the email address your reminder will be sent to. It's got some good utility functions as well, allowing you to 'snooze' a reminder so that it'll come back later, as well as looking over a list of your pending reminders.
NudgeMail is a free service. You don't need to register, so there are no account names or passwords to have to keep track of. You'll need a web browser and an email address to use it.

If you're really plugged-in, communication-wise, then you're monitoring several email accounts, as well as a bunch of social networking sites all at once. This means that you're probably running several different applications on your desktop, as well as having several windows open in your web browser. While you're going to know the latest and greatest by looking at all this stuff, you still have to look in a lot of different places. By the time you check Gmail, Twitter, Facebook, a POP mail account or two, and whatever else you've got on tap, you've worn your fingers to the bone, to say nothing of the likelihood of your missing some important stuff in there.
Inbox2 is designed to give you a hand with this problem. It lets you incorporate all your communications needs in one window. Now instead of having to wander around your desktop, you've got one consolidated inbox to receive all your mail and social network updates. No more having to jump from here to there, and much less chance of overlooking something in the process.
You can download Inbox2 for your Windows system.

Black holes are strange beasts. They're the ultimate read-only dropbox for light, matter, and anything else that gets close enough to them. (I'm not a physicist, nor do I play one on TV, so let's just agree to file this under 'poetic license'.) Metaphorically, they are used to stand for anything where once something goes in, it's never seen or heard from again. So how might this apply to software?
Black Hole is an app that lets you really, really get rid of stuff. Whether it's deleting files, clearing caches, emptying the clipboard, quitting apps, or securely dumping and getting rid of everything in the trash, this tool acts like a black hole for the stuff on your machine you don't want to have hanging around. It's easy to configure, only requiring you to tick checkboxes to decide which of these you want to accomplish with the application. And it comes with instructions to help you tweak advanced settings, like which recent items you want to send away.
You can grab a copy of Black Hole for your Mac. You'll need to be running OS X 10.6 to use it. (And when you jump to the publisher's site, you'll find the app about half-way down the page.)

Twitter use helped students communicate more with their instructors.
Twitter use might be more than an extracurricular activity for college students, according to researchers from three universities whose work suggests that using the popular microblogging service to discuss academics could help bolster student engagement and success.
In an article published in the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning Nov. 12, researchers unveiled findings from a midsized college campus that suggest students who communicated through Twitter during and after class had a GPA of about a half-point higher than students who didn’t use the social media site.

Official Google Blog: Can we talk? Better speech technology with Phonetic Arts: "Can we talk? Better speech technology with Phonetic Arts
12/03/2010 09:37:00 AM
In Star Trek, they don’t spend a lot of time typing things on keyboards—they just speak to their computers, and the computers speak back. It’s a more natural way to communicate, but getting there requires chipping away at a range of hard research problems. We’ve recently made some strides with speech technologies and tools that take voice input: for example, we launched Voice Search, Voice Input and Voice Actions for mobile phones, allowing you to speak web searches, compose emails by voice, ask your phone to play any song, and more. And last year we started automatically transcribing speech to produce captions on YouTube videos.
But what about when the computer speaks to you—in other words, voice output? There are already places you can hear this in action today—for example, Google Translate “speaks” translated text in multiple languages, and you can listen to navigation instructions as you drive—but there’s still a lot to do. That’s why we’re pleased to announce we’ve acquired Phonetic Arts, a speech synthesis company based in Cambridge, England. Phonetic Arts’ team of researchers and engineers work at the cutting edge of speech synthesis, delivering technology that generates natural computer speech from small samples of recorded voice.
There’s a particular focus right now in the U.K. on technology and innovation, and we’re delighted to be deepening our investment in the country with this acquisition. We already have a strong engineering center in London and look forward to welcoming Phonetic Arts to the team. We are excited about their technology, and while we don’t have plans to share yet, we’re confident that together we’ll move a little faster towards that Star Trek future.

Grab license keys and codes from the Registry
Grab license keys and codes from the Registry: "It's a sad day when your computer dies. On the other hand, it may be a happy day when you finally get that new zillion-gigabyte hard drive. The one thing these two days have in common is that you're going to have to re-install a bunch of stuff on your hard drive. Finding the original distribution media for all those programs is a daunting task. Grabbing all the license codes and serial numbers you need to re-install may be impossible. You're looking at stickers on user docs, email from software publishers, and a lot more. But hey, your computer know what all those numbers were, right? How about asking it for the info you need to re-install.
LicenseCrawler is a tool that makes it easier to re-capture those license keys and codes. It looks through your System Registry to find all the registration and license info it can get its hands on. While you could use RegEdit to go in and grab this stuff manually, why waste your time when this app will do it for you.

Nearly 15 percent of the world's Internet traffic, including that of many U.S. government and military sites, was briefly redirected through computer servers in China in April, according to a congressional commission report due out this week.
It is not clear whether the incident was deliberate, but the capability could enable severe malicious activities including the diversion of data and the interception of supposedly secure encrypted Internet traffic, the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission states in a report to Congress.

Shortened Links. Preview them, safely.
Avoid the security risk of shortened URLs
By Fred Langa
The compact URLs produced by services such as TinyURL, bit.ly, is.gd, and many others are convenient and save space, but they can also be used to hide the identity of malicious sites.
Fortunately, there are several ways to peek behind a shortened URL to see exactly where the link will take you — before you click it!
In fact, every URL-shortening service I'm aware of offers one or more ways to preview the real destination of a shortened link.
For example, here's a typical bit.ly URL that I created. All it does is take you to the windowssecrets.com home page, but there's no way to know that in advance — it's a blind link:
http://bit.ly/10Sjt
Let's say that (gasp!) you don't trust me, so you want to see where the link really goes before you click it.
It's easy: all you have to do is copy the link, paste it into the address bar of any browser window or tab, and add a plus sign to the end, like this:
http://bit.ly/10Sjt+
Adding a plus sign to the end of any bit.ly URL brings you to a special bit.ly page that shows you information about the link, including the full, expanded URL. Using the information on that bit.ly page, you can decide whether the link is safe and worth following.
TinyURL has a similar option. But instead of adding a plus sign at the end of a link, you prepend the word preview. For example, here's a regular TinyURL link to the Windows Secrets home page:
http://tinyurl.com/6u5ba
Copy that link into the address bar of your browser and add the word preview:
http://preview.tinyurl.com/6u5ba
Now the link will bring you to a preview page that displays the full, expanded URL

Is it safe to use a registry cleaner?
Is it safe to use a registry cleaner?: "more than any other performance enhancing tools, registry cleaners can potentially cause a lot of damage. Hence, you should only use one if your computer runs slow and you have exhausted all other means of cleaning up your system.
Chris Pirillo published a very informative article and a video about the subject. You can read it here. In short, he recommends that you do not use a registry cleaner.
Be sure to make a backup of your registry first and know how to restore it if needed. Also create a Windows Restore Point.

Can Twitter Make You Smarter? | Fast Company: "Can using Twitter make you smarter? A new semester-long study found that college students who used Twitter for educational purposes earned GPAs a half-point higher than a non-tweeting control group.
In a group of 125 students at an anonymous medium-sized public college in the Midwest, 70 students used Twitter to access information and complete class assignments; the remaining 55 students used a more typical Internet-based course-management system and billboard. Not only did the tweeting 70 earn higher GPAs, they also reported much higher levels of engagement. The findings were reported in the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning.

Mac image browser: "If you're trying to organize a stack of digital images, you've got your work cut out for you. If you're trying to do it all with the version of Preview that came with your Mac, you might as well just give up. You're going to need a tool with more horsepower if you ever want to get through this job. You want a tool like Lyn.
Lyn is an image viewer and browser for Mac. Along with your being able to look at your pictures—individually or in groups—you can also organize your collection. You've got access to tons of meta data at the same time: file name and size, image resolution, camera make and model, and more. Pick a field and sort your images. See what you've got, or add your own notes. It supports most digital picture formats, so your photos can coexist with your Photoshop images as well.
Lyn is a free Mac application. It runs under OS X 10.4 and later, and is compatible with systems running on PowerPC (G4 or better) or Intel-powered machines.

The two keys on PC keyboards that sport Microsoft logos--one with the Windows icon, the other with a menu graphic--go ignored by many users. On a desktop and larger laptops, that's understandable; it's just easier to keep using a mouse or a touchpad. But on a netbook, switching between the keyboard and the tiny touchpad crammed in front of it can get so physically uncomfortable that it's worthwhile to take a little time reacquainting yourself with these two keys. As a reminder, the Windows key pops up the Start menu and, when combined with other keys, executes a variety of desktop and program actions. The menu key takes the place of a mouse or touchpad's right-click button; to select the command you want faster, skip the cursor-arrow keys and instead hit the key corresponding to the underlined letter in the appropriate menu item. Practice using each of these keys, and you may find that your wrists don't feel as bad after a few hours of netbook computing--and that you start to use these shortcuts on bigger computers too.
Win-E -> Explorer
Win-M -> Hide Desktop
Win-Tab -> Alt-Tab with pictures
Win-F -> Search (but I prefer EVERYTHING for searching, and I use ctl-space to summon that)
